Domestic politics and policy, an overview:

The most important issue for Iraq in 2018 will be the parliamentary elections scheduled for May. Providing they go ahead on time these polls will be a significant test for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Security, an overview:

The defeat of IS is a major victory for Iraq and marks the end of the group’s presence as a territorial force. However, IS and other Sunni militant elements will continue to operate, especially in the desert and border areas, and will launch further attacks across the country, including in Baghdad.

International affairs, an overview:

Iraq will continue its efforts to rebalance its international relations by repositioning itself more within the Arab arena. Western powers will continue to support a unified Iraq and push for a resolution to the crisis between Baghdad and Erbil.

Economy, an overview:

The economy has struggled since 2014 because of the cost of the war against IS and low oil prices. Although the campaign against IS is over, the country will face continuing associated humanitarian costs, including dealing with the millions of displaced, as well as reconstruction costs.

Energy, an overview:

Iraq will make a major push to attract foreign investment into its energy sector on the back of the improved security climate.

Other industry, an overview:

With a more stable security environment and whole governorates that require rebuilding, Iraq offers enormous potential in the non-oil sectors for investors ready to stomach the risk.
