Situational analysis

Menas Associates provides expert analysis of the key political, social and security dynamics facing foreign investment activities in emerging markets.

Drawing on the unique country expertise of our network of external and in-house experts, Situational analysis reports are designed to provide our clients with the necessary contextual understanding to make decisions about their business in any given country, whether at a market-entry stage or at a more advanced phase of their involvement.

The issues covered in such reports are tailored to the requirements of each client. However, they typically include analysis of the following issues:

  • Political dynamics, including: key political actors and institutions; factors promoting political stability/instability; government attitudes and policies towards foreign investors; and the influence of foreign governments and other foreign companies.
  • Social dynamics, including: key ethnic, religious and socio-economic groupings; inter-group relations and their impact on political stability; and other social issues including community attitudes to environmental and human rights impacts.
  • Operating issues, including: the quality and predictability of public administration; the prevalence and patterns of corrupt practice; and the quality and availability of infrastructure for investors (transportation, energy, water etc).
  • Security dynamics: patterns and trends in organized and violent crime, terrorist activity, insurgency, political violence and social unrest; evaluation of their potential impact on foreign investment; the outlook for the security environment.

Depending on client requirements, our Situational analysis can address these issues in considerable historical depth or focus more directly on present conditions and future trends. They often focus on specific sectors (e.g. oil and gas, mining, financial services) or on specific issues and project locations. We work with our clients to establish the right level of focus and detail for their needs.
