In addition to providing specialist research services and expert testimony in international border disputes, Menas Associates also provides advisory services to clients engaged in major commercial arbitration cases. We offer clients a combination of independent international expertise supported by essential local knowledge and high-level local contacts.

Our reputation and experience enable Menas to mobilise experts through our extensive network of contacts at universities, research centres, specialist publications and associated consulting firms. The depth and flexibility of this network is particularly important when we provide paralegal and expert witness support services for lawyers and insurance underwriters engaged on major commercial arbitration cases.

We work with both insurance companies and insured companies on large-scale claims to determine whether the claim arose from political or normal commercial risk. In the case of commercial disputes, we can provide expert testimony on political, historical and business dynamics in the jurisdiction concerned, or advisory support on appropriate engagement strategies with in-country counterparties (e.g. governments, state-owned enterprises).

Over several years, Menas Associates has undertaken research and provided expert witnesses for major insurance claims and commercial arbitration cases involving projects in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. For example, we spent many years advising on the vast oil cases before the Iran–United States Claims Tribunal.
