Case study: Scenario planning in Russia
The challenge…
A large extractive sector company decided to enter Russia on an integrated
basis
with each of its business units being involved in order to obtain economies of
scale as a serious investor in a variety of sectors. It therefore needed to
understand Russia and what the possible scenarios were for its future and how
the
scenarios would impact on each of its projects in a variety of sectors.
The Menas solution...
We were engaged to provide the external expertise on Russia and to help run a
two day scenario planning workshop. The client brought together senior
executives
from each its business divisions from four continents who met in London for the
workshop. Having worked on two other scenario planning workshops for the same
client, Menas not only co-led the workshop but also provided four external
Russia
experts, and also wrote up the final scenarios and report.
The result...
The client was able to bring together and “educate” five different business units about Russia and produce four alternative future
scenarios. The team was then able to test the viability of about ten possible
projects in each of the scenarios and thereby prioritise the way in which the
company could, and perhaps should, proceed in developing its business in Russia
if
each scenario occurred.
