Capabilities of Menas do Brasil

Besides being able to undertake all of the types of projects that Menas Associates works on, Menas do Brasil also:

  • Assists clients with government relations, focussing in particular on energy-related agencies and the Congress: the Ministry of Mines & Energy, the regulatory agencies for oil & gas (ANP), and for electric power (ANEEL), Petrobrás, Eletrobrás, etc.

  • Assists clients in their relations with Brazilian and multilateral financial agencies (BNDES) and the regional banks (BNB and BASA), the Bank of Brazil in relation to PPP; the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank and their respective affiliates).

  • Assists clients in their dealings with the federal environmental agency (IBAMA) and its state counterparts.

  • Assists companies in their interface with NGOs and other entities working in the area of corporate social responsibility.

  • At clients' request, MdB also formulates specific assessments, tailored to their needs, on such topics as Brazil's political & security situation, foreign policy, international trade, etc.

  • Menas do Brasil produces Menas ' monthly Brazil Focus publication which is distributed by e-mail to world-wide subscribers. Brazil Focus covers political & economic developments in Brazil (and, where relevant, in neighbouring countries), as well as energy, petroleum, mining & infrastructure issues, and foreign policy.

  • Provide companies and their senior management with briefings and training exercises on how to do business in Brazil, and how to deal with specific agencies of the federal and state Administrations.

Although MdB will not take responsibility for media relations programmes on behalf of clients, it can recommend excellent Brazilian partners to do so.

Georges D Landau, managing director, Menas do Brasil

Georges is the founding editor of Menas Associates' Brazil Focus and is the Sao Paulo based resident managing director of Menas do Brasil Ltda.

Educated in law and public administration in Brazil and the Netherlands, he holds an MPA. and a LLM from Harvard University, and has taught international economic relations around the world.

After a stint in Brazil's foreign service and several government appointments, he pursued a career in international organisations. Between 1983-1989 he was the Paris-based European representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and had consulting assignments in Latin America, and with the World Bank. In 2001, he was a consultant to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for a major study on foreign direct investment in Brazil. Has published widely on topics of law, economics and international affairs.

Phillip Griffin started his career in general banking in 1984 in London with Australia's Westpac Banking Corporation before a period in stock-broking in the late 1980s with a subsidiary of Gerrard & National. He then returned to banking in 1989 at Citicorp Investment Bank, focusing on Emerging Markets, trade and corporate finance, earning the Citibank GAMS award in 1992. In 1993 he was hired to Morgan Grenfell (which subsequently became part of the Deutsche Bank group) to be the executive responsible for working on Middle East business with the bank's senior Middle East Adviser. He left Deutsche Bank in 2001 to establish his own consultancy business and was appointed a director of Menas at the beginning of 2002.

Dr. Charles Gurdon, director

Charles Gurdon joined Menas Services Ltd in 1980 as a senior researcher on international border disputes and other arbitration cases. In 1988, when the company diversified into consultancy work for corporate clients and newsletter publishing, Charles helped found the Menas Associates subsidiary and became its managing director. Since then he has run the company's consultancy portfolio and publication stable, and oversaw the restructuring of the Menas group which saw Menas Associates become the group's parent company.

Charles holds a B.A. (Hons.) Economics & Geography, M.Sc. (with distinction) and Ph.D. from the University of London's School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) where he specialised in the Middle East and Africa.

He is also the author of two books and numerous reports on Sudan and, before time constraints made it impossible, he was a regular commentator on radio and an occasional one on TV.
